Michael Spyres as Giasone in “Medea” at the Metropolitan Opera

Michael Spyres takes on the Argonaut whose betrayal sets Luigi Cherubini’s “Medea” in motion. On October 30, he makes his role debut as Giasone at the Metropolitan Opera, opposite Sonya Yoncheva in the title role. Carlo Rizzi conducts the first revival of David McVicar’s production, with further performances through November 21.

The American baritenor’s return follows his acclaimed first Tristan in last season’s new Met production of Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde.” His earlier roles at the house include Faust in “La Damnation de Faust,” the title role in “Idomeneo,” and Pollione in “Norma.”
