Michael Spyres

Michael Spyres is one of the most accomplished tenors of his generation, with more than 10 DVDs and 30 CDs to his name. Born and raised in the Ozarks in an extremely musical family, he has been celebrated in the world’s most prestigious international opera houses, festivals, and concert halls. Placing himself among the most legendary tenors, Michael has reached cult status as the only active baritenor today, noted for his interpretations across the widest range of repertoire, from Baroque to Classical to 20th century, while firmly establishing himself as an expert in the Bel Canto, Romantic, and French Grand Opera genres.

Recently, the Missouri-born singer has emerged as one of today’s most sought-after tenors in the Heldentenor repertoire. He made his Wagner debut as Lohengrin at the Opéra du Rhin in 2024, “soaring to the firmament of Wagner heaven” (Le Monde). During the 2024 Bayreuth Wagner Festival, Michael made his enthusiastically received house and role debut as Siegmund in Die Walküre, returning for his acclaimed first Stolzing in the 2025 opening production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, also reprising Siegmund. His first Tristan in Tristan und Isolde followed in a new production at the Metropolitan Opera in the 2025/26 season. Michael will return to Bayreuth in 2027 to sing the title role in a new production of Lohengrin.

Other performances in the 2026/27 season include the title roles in Don Carlos at the Wiener Staatsoper and Idomeneo at the Bayerische Staatsoper; his role debut as Giasone in Medea at the Metropolitan Opera; Jupiter in Semele at the Bayerische Staatsoper; Florestan in Fidelio at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and in an open-air performance at Warsaw’s Central Square; and concert performances of Porpora’s Mitridate at the Teatro Real Madrid and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Other concert engagements include recitals at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Gstaad New Year Music Festival and in Ljubljana; solo concerts in Bratislava and Zagreb; a Spanish tour featuring Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer, with stops in Madrid, Valencia and Castellón; Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Naples Philharmonic; and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

In his meteoric rise, Michael has quickly established himself as one of the greatest singers of his generation and has sung at many of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, concert halls, and festivals, including the Teatro alla Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Opéra National de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Teatro Real Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, La Monnaie Brussels, Dutch National Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Carnegie Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna Musikverein, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Salzburg Festival, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Peralada Festival, Rossini Opera Festival Pesaro, the Edinburgh Festival, and the BBC Proms.

Mr. Spyres has been the Artistic Director of his hometown opera company, the Ozarks Lyric Opera, and has been involved in every aspect of the renaissance of his regional company. In addition to his work as Artistic Director, he has translated libretti and actively teaches masterclasses while guiding young artists’ careers. In recent years, he has produced numerous events, including 15 operas and five gala concerts.
