Juan Sancho

Acclaimed at the world’s most emblematic opera houses, concert halls and festivals, Spanish tenor Juan Sancho is one of the most established singers of his vocal genre. Star turns have led him to the Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real Madrid, La Fenice Venice, Bolshoi Moscow, Theater an der Wien, Oper Köln, Opéra Royal de Versailles, Teatro de la Maestranza Seville, Barbican Center London, Palais des Beaux Arts Brussels, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Auditorio Nacional Madrid, Palau de la Música Valencia, Salle Pleyel Paris, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Lincoln Center New York, Tchaikovsky Hall Moscow, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Enescu Festival Bucharest, Festival d’Ambronay, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Granada Festival, Antwerp Early Music Festival, to name but a few.

Performances of the 2024/25 season include Tempo in Handel’s Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno at the Festival de Torroella, Astolfo in Caccini’s Alcina at the Festival d’Ambronay, Opéra national du Capitole Toulouse, Opéra de Versailles and Opéra de Lausanne, Bajazet in Handel’s Tamerlano at the Göttingen Handel Festival and the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, Oronte in Handel’s Alcina at Theater Bonn, Marzio in Mozart’s Mitridate and Triquet in Tchaikosvky’s Eugene Onegin at the Teatro Real Madrid as well as concerts at the Palau de la Música Valencia, Megaron Athens and Auditorio Nacional Madrid.

Juan Sancho’s discography includes his solo albums Handel: The Seven Deadly Sins (Enchiriadis) and Qué bien canta un ruiseñor (Gemelli) and a duet album with soprano Nuria Rial, Human Love, Love Divine, which also features music by Handel (Deutsche Harmonia Mundi). He recorded, all for Decca, Vinci’s Catone in Utica (title role), Pergolesi’s Germanico in Germania, Hasse’s Siroe, rè di Persia, Handel’s Arminio and Alessandro. Other recordings include Vinci’s Artaserse (DVD for Erato), Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (Château de Versailles) and L’Orfeo (Naïve), Cavalli’s Virtù di strali d’Amore with Fabio Biondi (Naxos) and the Monteverdi Trilogy with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants from the Teatro Real (DVDs for Dynamic and Virgin).

He has worked with conductors Michel Corboz, William Christie, Gustav Leonhardt, Fabio Biondi, Jordi Savall, Diego Fasolis, Marc Minkowski, Andrea Marcon, Ivor Bolton, Alan Curtis, Richard Egarr, George Petrou, Leonardo García-Alarcón, Riccardo Minasi, Emiliano González-Toro, Vàclav Luks, Hervé Niquet and Skip Sempé.

Juan Sancho was born in Seville (Spain) in 1982, where he began his piano studies with María Floristán. He graduated in Historical Singing at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Barcelona) with Lambert Climent and continued his vocal training with Raphaël Sikorski (Laboratoire de la Voix, Paris) and Raúl Giménez (Barcelona).

In addition to his work as an opera singer, Juan Sancho has a special affinity for the Spanish vocal repertoire of the 16th and 17th centuries. He has starred in various concerts and recording projects based on the Guerra Manuscript of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and the work of Juan Hidalgo (1614-1685) and José Marín (1618-1699), respectively.
