Eliane Coelho is regarded as one of the most versatile and interesting artists, whose repertoire ranges from Mozart to bel-canto, verismo and to the dramatic German Fach.
Recent performances include Giorgetta in Il tabarro in Manaus, Belem and Rio de Janeiro, La vida breve, Tosca and Salome (title role) in Rio de Janeiro, Emilia Marty in Věc Makropulos, Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung, Sieglinde in Die Walküre and Cherubini’s Medea in Sao Paulo, Isolde in Tristan und Isolde in Manaus, La vida breve, Tosca, Ariadne auf Naxos and Kostelnička in Jenůfa in Rio de Janeiro. She also performed Abigaille in Nabucco in Freiburg, Leonora in Il trovatore, Turandot in Belem as well as Serafina in Contos de Júlia at the 2023 Festival de Música Erudita do Espírito Santo.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Eliane Coelho studied singing in Hannover in Germany. First engagements made her obtain a very large and varied repertoire of lyric and coloratura parts, from the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Norina in Don Pasquale, Violetta in La traviata, Oscar in Un ballo in maschera, to Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos and Lulu. Her engagement at the Frankfurt Opera slowly led her to more dramatic parts like the title role in Rusalka, Mimì in La bohème and Tatiana in Eugene Onegin.
In 1991, she made her debut at the Vienna State Opera, where she interpreted practically all the roles of her current repertoire since: the title heroines in Salome and Arabella, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Elettra in Idomeneo, Maria Stuarda, Aida, Leonora in Il trovatore, Desdemona in Otello, Elisabetta in Don Carlo, Lina in Stiffelio, Elvira in Ernani, Elena in I vespri siciliani, Lady Macbeth, Abigaille in Nabucco, the title roles in Madama Butterfly, Tosca as well as Mimì in La bohème, Liù in Turandot, Giorgetta in Il tabarro, Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow, Giulietta in Les contes d’Hoffmann, Dame inCardillac, Fedora and Maddalena in Andrea Chénier, Margherita and Elena in Mefistofele and Salomé in Hérodiade. Under the baton of Zubin Mehta, she achieved a triumphal success as Hélène in a new production of Jérusalem.
Numerous performances in past years lead her to the following theatres: Bavarian State Opera Munich (Elettra in Idomeneo, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Salome), Scala di Milano (Madama Butterfly), Megaron Athens (Giselda in I lombardi and Elena in I vespri siciliani), Zürich (Andrea Chénier and Fedora), Aix-en-Provence (Elettra in Idomeneo), Deutsche Oper Berlin (Tosca), State Opera Berlin (Salome, Madama Butterfly and the title role of Turandot), Stockholm (Aida and Arabella), Tokyo (Salome, The Merry Widow), Dresden (Salome, Aida), State Opera Hamburg (Madama Butterfly), St. Gallen (title roles in Turandot and Norma), Bucharest (role debut in the title role of La Gioconda, Manon Lescaut, Lina in Stiffelio, Tosca, Amelia in Simon Boccanegra, Lucrezia Contarini in I due Foscari), Frankfurt (Salome), Manaus (La Gioconda, role debut as Katerina Ismailova in Lady Macbeth from Mtsensk), Belo Horizonte (Erwartung) well as and to Opéra Bastille in Paris, Welsh National Opera und Amsterdam with Salome.
1998 she was honored with the title “Kammersängerin” in Vienna.
